Football Action Resumes at Women's World Cup in China
Four teams, two from Group C and two from Group D, were sent to the single-elimination quarterfinal round.
Norway trounced Ghana, 7-2 to finish as the top team from Group C. Australia also advances to the quarterfinal round after playing Canada to a 2-2 draw. Brazil became the only team to win all three of its first round games with a 1-0 victory over Denmark. The other team to advance to the quarterfinal round from Group D is host China, which scored an impressive 2-0 win over New Zealand.
Among those teams going home is Sweden, the 2003 runner-up. This tournament marks the first time the Swedes have failed to reach the quarterfinals at a World Cup.
The quarterfinal round opens Saturday with the United States facing England in Tianjin, while defending champion Germany plays North Korea in Wuhan. The other two quarterfinals are on Sunday, and feature Brazil against Australia, while Norway plays China. The final is September 30 in Shanghai.

Health Workers Begin Polio Vaccination Drive in Afghanistan
Health workers in Afghanistan have launched a program to vaccinate children against polio. United Nations and Afghan government personnel began administering vaccines Wednesday to children in parts of southern and eastern Afghanistan.
The three-day polio immunization drive will continue until Friday, September 21, which the U.N. has designated as an International Day of Peace. The U.N. has encouraged Afghan people to mark the day by holding events urging peace.
Roshan Khadivi, a spokesperson for the U.N. children's agency UNICEF, said that the vaccination teams hope to reach 1.3 million Afghan children. The UNICEF spokesperson says health workers will visit areas that were missed by previous polio vaccination campaigns because of a lack of security. She says Afghan community leaders have agreed to support the campaign.
